In typical BMW fashion, the video shows interesting prototypes from the "secret garage", including a one-off M5 convertible, a Z3 with a V12 unit and a unique M8 with an engine derived from a Le Mans race car. As we all know, none of the three vehicles got the green light for production, but BMW engineers built fully functional prototypes and kept them well preserved for years to come.

Starting with the M5 Cabriolet, it's important to point out that it's a variant of the M5 E34 model with two doors and a soft top from the nineties. Keep in mind that this generation of M5 was only available as a four-door sedan and five-door touring body, so turning it into a convertible was no easy task. The vehicle comes with a cabin equipped with four seats featuring integrated seat belts, a large trunk with space for a retractable roof and several custom body panels. The chassis is shared with the standard M5, including the 3.8-liter flat-six engine.

The next amazing prototype looks like a regular Z3 M Roadster, but hides something really special under the hood. BMW engineers took the 5.4-liter V12 from the 8 Series and put it into this rear-wheel drive roadster. The prototype is described as "too much", with a less than ideal weight balance, although the brutality of the V12 engine makes it completely exceptional. The prototype was built in 1999 and appeared publicly several times before.

Finally, the famous M8 prototype arrives and is also present at the show, showing what could have been had BMW decided to offer a full M variant of the 8 Series. A red-painted prototype with a unique body kit, including side intakes and sports bumpers, recently presented in detail in another video. Under the hood is a tuned six-liter V12 with dry sump lubrication that was the basis of the Le Mans series racing car. It is interesting that the fuel tank is mounted on the trunk because packing everything needed in a rather tight space was a real challenge.

The video also gives us a sneak peek at other cars from the show, including the stunning BMW 3.0 CSL racing car and the first M-badged 5 Series.
