UNDERBODY PROTECTION
Professional Underbody & Anti-Corrosion Protection for Modern and Classic Vehicles
Protect the metal before rust becomes a restoration job.
At Bavarian Old School, underbody protection is not a quick spray job.
We inspect the vehicle, clean the underbody, identify corrosion, repair damaged metal where necessary, prepare the surfaces properly and apply a professional corrosion-protection system using Dinitrol products.
Because there is a big difference between:
covering rust
and
actually dealing with it.
Our approach is simple:
INSPECT → REPAIR → PREPARE → PROTECT → MAINTAIN
From everyday cars and modern vehicles to classic cars, BMW E-Codes, VW Transporters, SUVs and collector vehicles, we treat the underbody as an important part of the vehicle — not something that should simply be made black.
Based in Ljubljana, Slovenia.
REQUEST AN UNDERBODY INSPECTION
WE DON'T COVER RUST.
WE FIX IT — THEN WE PROTECT IT.
This is the principle behind our underbody protection service.
If we find light surface corrosion on otherwise sound metal, the area can often be properly cleaned, treated and prepared for corrosion protection.
But if we find badly corroded, weakened or perforated metal, applying another layer of coating over it is not a repair.
Rust protection cannot turn rotten metal into good metal.
That is why our service can go further than a conventional underbody treatment.
Our own bodywork and mechanical team can deal with the underlying problem before the final corrosion-protection stage.
If the vehicle requires metal repair, welding or replacement of corroded sections, we can assess and carry out the necessary work before the protection is applied.
ONE WORKSHOP. ONE TEAM. ONE SOLUTION.
You don't have to take the vehicle to one workshop for rust repair, another for cleaning and another for underbody protection.
If we find a problem, we can deal with it.
WHY UNDERBODY PROTECTION MATTERS
Most corrosion starts where you don't normally look.
Underneath the vehicle.
The underside of a car is constantly exposed to conditions that accelerate corrosion:
-
water
-
road salt
-
moisture
-
dirt
-
mud
-
stone impact
-
temperature changes
-
mechanical damage
-
damaged factory coatings
-
previous repairs
-
accumulated contamination
Road salt and moisture can remain around seams, joints, wheel arches, suspension mounting points and enclosed sections.
Small areas of damaged coating can expose metal.
A small corrosion spot can develop into a much larger problem.
And once corrosion has progressed far enough, prevention becomes restoration.
THAT IS WHY WE PREFER TO DEAL WITH CORROSION EARLY.
Professional underbody protection is not about making the underside look newer.
It is about protecting sound metal, addressing corrosion properly and reducing the risk of further deterioration.
WHAT IS UNDERBODY PROTECTION?
Underbody protection is a corrosion-protection treatment designed to protect the underside of a vehicle from environmental and mechanical exposure.
Depending on the vehicle and its condition, the treatment may involve:
-
underbody cleaning
-
corrosion inspection
-
surface preparation
-
treatment of suitable surface corrosion
-
repair of damaged metal
-
protection of seams and vulnerable areas
-
application of underbody protection
-
cavity protection
-
local touch-ups
-
final inspection
-
photographic documentation
The exact process depends on the vehicle.
A nearly new car, a 20-year-old daily driver and a 40-year-old classic car should not receive exactly the same treatment.
THERE IS NO SENSIBLE ONE-PRODUCT-FITS-EVERY-CAR SOLUTION.
OUR UNDERBODY PROTECTION PROCESS
01 — COMPLETE UNDERBODY INSPECTION
Every vehicle starts with an inspection.
We put the vehicle on the lift and inspect the underside properly.
We look at:
-
existing factory coatings
-
previous underbody treatments
-
visible corrosion
-
damaged or loose coatings
-
seams and joints
-
wheel arches
-
suspension areas
-
mounting points
-
exposed metal
-
previous repairs
-
areas where water and dirt can accumulate
We also look for signs that a vehicle has been previously repaired or protected.
IF WE FIND A PROBLEM, WE TELL YOU.
We do not hide structural corrosion underneath a new layer of protective coating.
02 — THOROUGH CLEANING
A protective coating is only as good as the surface underneath it.
The underbody must be properly cleaned before the condition of the vehicle can be assessed accurately.
Depending on the vehicle, this can involve removing:
-
road dirt
-
salt
-
mud
-
grease
-
oil contamination
-
loose old material
-
surface contamination
-
deteriorated protective coatings
The objective is not simply to make the underside look clean.
THE OBJECTIVE IS TO REVEAL WHAT IS ACTUALLY THERE.
03 — DRYING
Moisture and corrosion protection do not belong together.
Before protection is applied, the treated areas need to be properly dry and prepared.
This is one of the less glamorous parts of the process.
It is also one of the most important.
04 — CORROSION ASSESSMENT & PREPARATION
Once the underbody is clean and dry, we can properly assess the corrosion.
We distinguish between:
SURFACE CORROSION
Corrosion affecting the surface of otherwise sound metal.
This may be suitable for cleaning, mechanical preparation and subsequent corrosion protection.
ADVANCED CORROSION
Corrosion that has weakened the metal, created perforation or affected structural areas.
This may require proper bodywork before protection.
PREVIOUSLY REPAIRED AREAS
Old repairs can sometimes become corrosion points themselves.
We inspect them rather than automatically covering them.
05 — METAL REPAIR WHEN REQUIRED
THIS IS WHERE OUR RESTORATION EXPERIENCE MAKES A DIFFERENCE.
Sometimes underbody inspection reveals a problem that cannot be solved with a coating.
We may find:
-
perforated panels
-
weakened metal
-
corroded seams
-
damaged mounting areas
-
failed previous repairs
-
heavily rusted sections
-
areas requiring welding
-
sections requiring metal replacement
In those situations, we do not simply cover the problem.
Our bodywork specialists can repair or replace damaged metal where required.
The process may include:
Cutting out damaged metal → fabricating or fitting replacement metal → welding → cleaning → preparation → corrosion protection
The exact repair depends on the vehicle and the extent of the corrosion.
REPAIR FIRST.
PROTECT SECOND.
06 — SURFACE PREPARATION
After corrosion treatment or metal repair, the surface must be properly prepared for the next stage.
This is where we make sure that:
-
loose material has been removed
-
unstable coatings have been addressed
-
repaired areas are properly prepared
-
contamination has been removed
-
the surface is suitable for the selected protection system
We do not believe in putting a new coating over a surface that is not suitable for it.
07 — DINITROL UNDERBODY PROTECTION
Once the vehicle has been properly prepared, we apply the appropriate corrosion-protection system.
We use professional Dinitrol corrosion-protection products according to the vehicle, surface and treatment requirements.
Dinitrol 4941/CAR is specifically classified by the manufacturer as a long-term underbody protection product and is designed to form a durable protective film with good adhesion, flexibility and wear resistance.
The important point is not simply which product is in the spray gun.
THE RESULT DEPENDS ON THE ENTIRE SYSTEM:
Condition → Preparation → Product → Application → Inspection → Maintenance
08 — CAVITY PROTECTION
The underside is only part of the corrosion equation.
Some of the most vulnerable areas are hidden inside the vehicle.
Examples include:
-
rocker panels
-
sills
-
doors
-
enclosed structural sections
-
cavities
-
other areas where moisture can enter and remain trapped
For these areas, a dedicated cavity-protection product can be used where appropriate.
Dinitrol offers dedicated cavity-protection products designed to penetrate and protect enclosed vehicle sections.
UNDERBODY PROTECTION AND CAVITY PROTECTION ARE NOT THE SAME THING.
A complete corrosion-protection strategy may require both.
09 — FINAL INSPECTION
Once the treatment is complete, the entire underbody is inspected again.
We check:
-
coverage
-
visible areas of protection
-
repaired sections
-
vulnerable areas
-
edges and seams
-
areas around suspension and mounting points
-
cavity-treatment access points where applicable
-
overall finish
Selected vehicles are photographed before, during and after the treatment.
Because we believe you should be able to see what was done to your car.
CORROSION REPAIR AND CORROSION PROTECTION ARE NOT THE SAME THING
This distinction is extremely important.
CORROSION REPAIR
Repairs the damaged metal.
This can involve:
-
cutting out rusted metal
-
fabricating replacement sections
-
welding
-
replacing corroded panels
-
repairing seams
-
restoring damaged mounting areas
CORROSION PROTECTION
Protects properly prepared metal and suitable existing surfaces against further corrosion.
This can involve:
-
underbody protection
-
cavity protection
-
seam protection
-
protective waxes
-
corrosion-resistant coatings
-
stone-chip protection where appropriate
ONE DOES NOT REPLACE THE OTHER.
Repair the metal first. Protect it afterwards.
WHY WE DON'T JUST SPRAY OVER RUST
Because you need to know what is underneath.
A thick layer of black coating can make an underside look impressive while hiding:
-
corrosion
-
loose material
-
failed repairs
-
damaged seams
-
moisture traps
-
perforated metal
That is not preservation.
That is concealment.
A professional underbody treatment should make future inspection and maintenance easier — not harder.
OUR GOAL IS NOT TO HIDE THE PROBLEM.
OUR GOAL IS TO SOLVE IT.
WHY WE DON'T ALWAYS REMOVE ALL ORIGINAL UNDERBODY COATING
Removing every millimetre of original coating is not automatically the correct approach.
If the original material is sound, properly bonded and suitable as part of the protection system, unnecessary removal can do more harm than good.
We assess the condition first.
Sound original protection may stay.
Loose, damaged, contaminated or unsuitable material may need to be removed or prepared.
WE REMOVE WHAT NEEDS TO BE REMOVED — NOT WHAT DOESN'T.
This is especially important on classic and collector vehicles.
DINITROL CORROSION PROTECTION
PROFESSIONAL PRODUCTS. PROPER PREPARATION. CORRECT APPLICATION.
Dinitrol has a dedicated automotive corrosion-protection range covering underbody protection, cavity sealing, stone-chip protection and other corrosion-protection applications.
For underbody applications, Dinitrol 4941/CAR is one of the products specifically classified by the manufacturer as long-term underbody protection.
For enclosed cavities, Dinitrol offers dedicated cavity-protection products such as Dinitrol 1000.
The products are not used as a substitute for preparation.
A GOOD PRODUCT CANNOT FIX A BAD SUBSTRATE.
That is why we put so much emphasis on inspection, cleaning and preparation.
WHAT TYPES OF VEHICLES CAN BENEFIT FROM UNDERBODY PROTECTION?
MODERN CARS
Preventive corrosion protection can make sense before significant corrosion develops.
The earlier a corrosion problem is identified, the easier it is generally to deal with.
DAILY DRIVERS
Vehicles driven throughout the year are exposed to:
water + dirt + salt + mechanical wear
Annual use in winter conditions can be particularly demanding on the underbody.
CLASSIC CARS
Classic vehicles require a different philosophy.
The goal is preservation.
Not simply covering everything with a thick black coating.
We want to preserve:
-
original metal
-
original construction
-
sound factory finishes
-
seams
-
correct materials
-
future inspectability
CLASSIC BMW & BMW E-CODE CARS
BMW E21, E24, E28, E30, E34 and other classic BMWs are particularly relevant to us.
These vehicles are part of the classic-car world we work with every day.
We understand that the underside of a classic BMW is not simply a surface to be painted black.
It is part of the history of the car.
VW TRANSPORTERS AND CAMPERS
VW Transporters and Campers are often exposed to years of moisture, road salt, dirt and mechanical wear.
Their size and construction also mean that underbody inspection and treatment can be considerably more involved than on a small passenger car.
SUVs & 4x4s
SUVs and 4x4s often have:
-
larger underbody areas
-
more exposed components
-
additional suspension components
-
greater exposure to dirt
-
off-road or rough-road use
This makes proper inspection and protection particularly important.
VANS & COMMERCIAL VEHICLES
Larger vehicles spend more time on the road and often accumulate considerably more contamination underneath.
Their size also affects the amount of preparation and protection required.
UNDERBODY PROTECTION FOR CLASSIC CARS
PRESERVATION, NOT COSMETICS.
A classic car should not necessarily look like a brand-new modern vehicle underneath.
The objective is to preserve the car.
That means:
-
careful cleaning
-
conservative corrosion treatment
-
preserving sound original surfaces
-
repairing damaged metal properly
-
avoiding unnecessary removal of original material
-
protecting seams and vulnerable areas
-
documenting the condition
-
keeping future inspection possible
For collector and enthusiast vehicles, this matters.
A GOOD PRESERVATION TREATMENT SHOULD HELP YOU MAINTAIN THE CAR FOR YEARS TO COME.
WHAT ABOUT EXISTING RUST?
NOT ALL RUST MEANS THE SAME THING.
If you are concerned about rust underneath your vehicle, the first step is not to buy a can of coating.
The first step is to find out what you actually have.
LIGHT SURFACE RUST
May be suitable for cleaning, preparation and corrosion protection.
HEAVY SURFACE CORROSION
Requires a more extensive preparation process and may require additional treatment.
PERFORATED METAL
Requires bodywork before protective coating.
STRUCTURAL CORROSION
Requires proper assessment and repair.
OLD, FAILED UNDERBODY COATING
May need partial or extensive removal and preparation before new protection is applied.
HOW LONG DOES UNDERBODY PROTECTION LAST?
There is no honest universal answer.
The lifespan of a protection system depends on:
-
vehicle usage
-
road salt exposure
-
moisture
-
climate
-
stone impact
-
off-road use
-
mechanical damage
-
previous corrosion
-
preparation quality
-
product selection
-
application
-
maintenance
A classic car stored in a dry garage is exposed to very different conditions from a daily-driven van used through Slovenian winters.
That is why we don't promise that a single application makes a vehicle permanently corrosion-proof.
LONG-TERM PROTECTION REQUIRES INSPECTION AND MAINTENANCE.
OUR 10-YEAR UNDERBODY PROTECTION GUARANTEE
LONG-TERM PROTECTION REQUIRES LONG-TERM CARE.
For eligible treatments, we offer a 10-Year Underbody Protection Guarantee subject to our written guarantee terms.
This is not a "spray it once and forget about it" guarantee.
Your vehicle continues to experience:
-
road salt
-
water
-
moisture
-
stone impact
-
dirt
-
mechanical damage
-
lifting and workshop work
-
repairs
-
accidents
-
everyday driving
No protective system can prevent damage caused by every external factor.
That is why our 10-year guarantee is built around a simple principle:
ANNUAL UNDERBODY INSPECTION
To maintain the validity of the guarantee, the vehicle must return to Bavarian Old School for a documented annual underbody inspection, in accordance with the applicable written guarantee terms.
During the inspection, we check for:
-
new corrosion
-
damaged protection
-
stone-impact damage
-
mechanical damage
-
areas where protection may have deteriorated
-
newly exposed metal
-
new corrosion-prone areas
-
changes caused by repairs or modifications
Where required, we can recommend local repairs, additional corrosion treatment or renewal of affected protection.
PROTECT → INSPECT → MAINTAIN → PROTECT AGAIN
That is how we approach long-term corrosion prevention.
WHY ANNUAL INSPECTION MATTERS
A car is not a static object.
The underside can be damaged by:
-
road debris
-
potholes
-
workshop equipment
-
lifting points
-
suspension repairs
-
exhaust work
-
accidents
-
modifications
-
welding
-
stone impact
-
corrosion developing in areas that were not previously affected
An annual inspection gives us the opportunity to identify problems while they are still manageable.
And because our bodywork and mechanical team works under the same roof, we can deal with problems that require more than simply applying another layer of protection.
THE GUARANTEE IS NOT JUST A PROMISE.
IT IS A MAINTENANCE PROGRAMME.
IMPORTANT GUARANTEE INFORMATION
The 10-Year Underbody Protection Guarantee applies only to eligible vehicles and treatments and is subject to the applicable written guarantee terms.
The guarantee conditions, duration, covered areas, exclusions, annual inspection requirement and procedure for making a guarantee claim are provided before or at the time of the treatment.
The annual inspection must be documented in order to maintain guarantee validity.
Damage caused by accidents, external impact, incorrect repairs, modifications, third-party work, mechanical damage or other circumstances outside the corrosion-protection system may fall outside the guarantee.
Any corrosion or damage identified during an annual inspection should be addressed as recommended.
FULL GUARANTEE TERMS APPLY.
WHY SLOVENIA?
Slovenian roads are not particularly kind to the underside of a car.
Winter driving, moisture and road salt create exactly the conditions in which corrosion protection becomes important.
And Slovenian car owners already understand the concept.
Many people remember their parents or grandparents having cars professionally treated against rust decades ago.
The technology has evolved.
The principle has not:
KEEP MOISTURE, SALT AND CORROSION AWAY FROM THE METAL.

A commercial van.
The process starts the same way:
PUT IT ON THE LIFT.
LOOK UNDERNEATH.
TELL THE TRUTH ABOUT WHAT YOU FIND.
COMMON UNDERBODY PROTECTION QUESTIONS
What is underbody protection?
Underbody protection is a corrosion-protection treatment designed to protect the underside of a vehicle against environmental and mechanical exposure such as moisture, road salt, dirt and stone impact.
The correct treatment depends on the condition of the vehicle.
Is underbody protection worth it?
For vehicles exposed to moisture, road salt and year-round driving, professional corrosion protection can be a worthwhile preventative measure.
It is particularly valuable when applied before corrosion becomes advanced.
When should I protect my car against rust?
The best time is before serious corrosion develops.
However, older vehicles can still benefit from professional protection after proper inspection and preparation.
Can you protect a car that already has rust?
Sometimes.
Surface corrosion may be suitable for preparation and protection.
Advanced or structural corrosion may require metal repair first.
Every vehicle needs to be assessed individually.
Can you repair rust before applying underbody protection?
Yes.
If damaged or perforated metal is found, our bodywork team can carry out the necessary repair before the protection stage.
The sequence is:
Repair → clean → prepare → protect.
Can you simply spray Dinitrol over rust?
Not as a blanket rule.
The surface needs to be suitable for the selected protection system.
Loose corrosion, unstable coatings and contamination must be addressed appropriately.
Where corrosion is present, the correct preparation and product sequence depends on the condition of the substrate.
Do you remove all old underbody coating?
No.
There is no reason to remove sound, well-adhered material simply because it is old.
We assess its condition.
Damaged, loose, contaminated or unsuitable material may need to be removed or prepared.
Do you use Dinitrol?
Yes.
We use professional Dinitrol corrosion-protection products according to the vehicle and treatment requirements.
Different Dinitrol products are designed for different applications, including underbody protection and cavity protection.
Do you protect cavities as well?
Where appropriate, yes.
Cavity protection is a separate part of the corrosion-protection system and may be used in areas such as doors, sills, rocker panels and enclosed structural sections.
Can you protect a classic car?
Absolutely.
Classic cars are one of our core areas.
The process is adapted to the vehicle, its construction, its existing condition and the goal of preservation.
Can you protect a BMW E30?
Yes.
BMW E-Code vehicles are particularly suited to careful inspection and preservation because maintaining original metal and preventing further corrosion can have a major impact on the vehicle's long-term condition.
Can you protect a VW T4?
Yes.
VW T4s and other Transporters are frequently exposed to years of road salt, moisture, dirt and mechanical wear.
We can inspect the complete underbody and determine whether the vehicle needs cleaning, corrosion preparation, bodywork or protection.
How long does the treatment take?
It depends on the vehicle.
A straightforward passenger car with a clean underbody requires significantly less work than a large van with years of contamination, old coatings and corrosion.
We provide an estimated timeframe after inspection.
How often should underbody protection be inspected?
For vehicles covered by our 10-Year Underbody Protection Guarantee, an annual documented inspection is required according to the written guarantee terms.
Even without the guarantee programme, regular inspection is sensible for vehicles exposed to winter conditions and road salt.
Does the 10-year guarantee mean the car cannot rust for 10 years?
No.
The guarantee is not a promise that no corrosion can ever appear anywhere on a vehicle for ten years.
It is a protection guarantee subject to defined conditions, covered areas and annual inspection requirements.
The vehicle remains exposed to road salt, impact, mechanical damage, repairs and environmental conditions.
That is why the annual inspection is an essential part of the programme.
Can I inspect my underbody before deciding?
Yes.
We can inspect the vehicle, show you what we find and explain what should be done.
You can then decide which treatment is appropriate.
Can I see photographs of the work?
Yes.
Selected projects are documented before, during and after treatment.
We believe transparency is part of professional restoration work.
WHEN SHOULD YOU HAVE YOUR UNDERBODY INSPECTED?
Consider an inspection if:
-
you drive the vehicle throughout the winter
-
you regularly drive on salted roads
-
you have recently bought an older vehicle
-
you own a classic car
-
you have a VW T4 or similar van
-
you see surface rust underneath
-
the old underbody coating is cracking or peeling
-
the vehicle has had previous bodywork
-
you don't know when the underbody was last treated
-
you are preparing a vehicle for long-term ownership
-
you are restoring a classic car
-
you want to preserve a low-mileage or collector vehicle
IF YOU ARE NOT SURE — PUT IT ON THE LIFT.
A 30-minute inspection can tell you more than guessing from underneath the driveway.
BEFORE YOU BUY AN OLDER CAR
CHECK WHAT IS UNDERNEATH IT.
A clean-looking exterior can hide a very different story underneath.
Before buying an older or classic vehicle, an underbody inspection can reveal:
-
corrosion
-
previous welding
-
structural repairs
-
poorly repaired rust
-
thick old underbody coatings
-
hidden corrosion
-
damaged mounting points
-
leaking fluids
-
previous accident repairs
If you are buying a classic or enthusiast vehicle, we can also assess the condition of the underbody as part of a wider pre-purchase inspection.
DON'T BUY THE PAINT.
CHECK THE METAL.
OUR WORK IS DOCUMENTED
Where appropriate, we photograph:
BEFORE
DURING
AFTER
This gives the owner a permanent record of the condition of the vehicle and the work performed.
For classic cars and long-term preservation projects, documentation can become valuable over time.
UNDERBODY PROTECTION IS PRESERVATION
A car is not protected because it looks black underneath.
It is protected because:
-
corrosion has been identified
-
damaged metal has been repaired
-
surfaces have been prepared
-
appropriate products have been selected
-
protection has been correctly applied
-
the vehicle is inspected over time
THAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A COATING JOB AND A PRESERVATION PROGRAMME.
WANT TO KNOW WHAT IS HAPPENING UNDER YOUR CAR?
You don't need to wait until rust becomes a serious problem.
Bring the vehicle in.
Put it on the lift.
We'll show you exactly what is underneath it.
No guessing.
No hiding corrosion under a fresh coat of black.
No pretending that rotten metal can be fixed with a spray gun.
Just an honest assessment, proper repair where required and the right protection for your vehicle.

Good corrosion protection is not about hiding rust.
It is about preventing good metal from becoming a restoration project.
And when corrosion has already gone too far, the answer is not another layer of coating.
It is proper repair.
Then proper preparation.
Then proper protection.
